The Somatotype Myth

Why classifying yourself as an Ectomorph, Mesomorph, or Endomorph is pseudoscientific nonsense.

The Origin of the Myth

The concepts of Ectomorph, Mesomorph, and Endomorph were not created by a physiologist or a medical doctor. They were created in the 1940s by William Sheldon, a psychologist.

Sheldon's theory, known as constitutional psychology, attempted to link physical body types to psychological traits and criminal behavior. It had absolutely nothing to do with training response, metabolic rates, or nutritional partitioning.

  • Ectomorph: Supposedly tall, thin, fragile, and intellectually anxious.
  • Mesomorph: Supposedly muscular, athletic, and aggressively dominant.
  • Endomorph: Supposedly round, soft, and relaxed or lazy.

Why it Fails in Physiology

The fitness industry co-opted Sheldon's psychological classifications to sell diet programs. "Eat this way for your body type!"

This is physiological garbage for several reasons:

  1. Body Shape is Not Fixed: If a 130kg sedentary male (an "Endomorph") spends 5 years powerlifting and dieting down to 90kg with 10% body fat, he suddenly looks like a "Mesomorph". His underlying genetics did not change; his physical output and energy balance did.
  2. Bone Structure vs Tissue: You can be born with wide clavicles or narrow hips (bone structure is fixed), but you cannot be born destined to be fat. "Endomorph" is simply a descriptor for someone currently carrying excess adipose tissue.
  3. Metabolic Rates are Standard: The idea that "Ectomorphs" have uniquely blazing metabolisms is false. Clinical metabolic ward studies show that resting metabolic rates vary very little between individuals of the same lean mass. The skinny person who "eats whatever they want" usually just has a very low appetite or high NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis).

What Actually Matters

Instead of boxing yourself into a 1940s psychological archetype, track the biological metrics that dictate your physical reality:

  1. Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE): Measure your true caloric output.
  2. Macronutrient Ratios: Ensure adequate protein for muscle protein synthesis (1.6g - 2.2g per kg of body weight).
  3. Progressive Overload: Mechanical tension drives muscle growth, regardless of your bone structure.
  4. Hormonal Profile: Testosterone, free T3, and cortisol levels dictate nutrient partitioning far more than "body type."

Stop blaming your "Endomorph genetics" for a caloric surplus.
