Hydration Variance

How water weight manipulates bioelectrical impedance, scale weight, and DEXA scans, ruining your body composition data.

The Water Problem

The human body is roughly 60% water. This water is distributed intracellularly (inside the cells, like muscle glycogen) and extracellularly (blood plasma, interstitial fluid).

When you track body composition, you are attempting to measure fixed tissue (fat and muscle). However, hydration fluctuates wildly day-to-day based on sodium intake, carbohydrate intake, stress (cortisol), and fluid consumption. This variance destroys the reliability of almost every testing method.

Impact on BIA (Smart Scales)

Bioelectrical Impedance relies entirely on total body water to estimate lean mass.

  • Dehydration: Increases electrical resistance. The scale algorithm interprets this resistance as fat tissue. If you weigh yourself after a heavy sweating session, the scale will claim your body fat percentage went up.
  • Hyperhydration: Decreases electrical resistance. The scale interprets the easy current flow as high muscle mass. Chug a liter of water, wait 20 minutes, and the scale will tell you that you gained lean mass and lost body fat.

Impact on Scale Weight

Glycogen is how your body stores carbohydrates in the muscle and liver. For every 1 gram of glycogen stored, your body holds roughly 3 grams of water.

If you eat a large pizza (high carb, high sodium) on Friday night, you may easily "gain" 2.5kg by Saturday morning. You did not gain 2.5kg of adipose tissue; you refilled glycogen stores and retained extracellular water due to sodium. This is why daily weigh-ins must be averaged over 7 to 14 days to establish a true trend line.

Impact on DEXA Scans

Even clinical DEXA scans are vulnerable. DEXA software assumes that your fat-free mass has a constant hydration fraction of 73.2%.

If you undergo a DEXA scan in a glycogen-depleted state (e.g., deep into a ketogenic diet), your lean mass will physically contain less water. The DEXA X-rays will read less dense tissue, and the machine will report a loss of lean body mass and a corresponding spike in body fat percentage, even if your actual skeletal muscle protein remained untouched.

Protocol for Minimizing Hydration Error

To extract useful data from any measurement method, you must lock down the variables:

  1. Time of Day: Always measure immediately upon waking.
  2. Pre-Measurement Action: Urinate and defecate before stepping on the scale or using calipers.
  3. Food/Drink: Zero food or liquid intake prior to measurement.
  4. Training Status: Never measure within 12 hours of a workout.
  5. Dietary State: Do not test after a massive "cheat day" or during a severe carbohydrate depletion phase.
